С������ student Nicola Tuthill has become Ireland’s first ever gold medal winner at the European Throwing Cup.

The 21-year-old from Bandon, Co. Cork, took victory in the women’s U-23 hammer in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Tuthill previously became Ireland’s first ever medallist in European Throwing Cup history when she picked up silver in the women’s U-23 hammer in 2023. She went on to win silver again in the 2024 competition.

The Paris Olympian landed gold this year with a European U-23 leading mark of 69.74m, just shy of her Irish U-23 record of 70.32m from last May.

She beat Sweden’s Thea Löfman (69.06m), who took the silver medal, and Germany’s Aileen Kuhn (67.25m), who won bronze.

Ireland finished joint third on the overall medal table behind Germany and Italy at the European Throwing Cup, with Anna Gavigan taking home silver in the U-23 women’s discus, and Oisín Joyce winning bronze in the U-23 javelin.

A second year Science student and Ad Astra Elite Sport Scholar at ������, Tuthill is only the third female Irish thrower to become an Olympian. She was one of four current students at the University to compete in Paris last year.

Tuthill was named Field Athlete of the Year at the 2024 National Athletics Awards, as well as University Athlete of the Year in 2023.
