Podcast explores Joyce's Dublin in 'The Dead’, the final story in his 1914 collection Dubliners

A series of podcasts exploring the representation of Dublin in James Joyce's short story 'The Dead' has been produced by University College Dublin and the , in collaboration with Athena Media.

The ‘Joyce’s Dublin’ project showcases some of the archival holdings at the Special Collections at the , the and the . It offers listeners an understanding of the short story from Joyce's Dubliners and gives a strong sense of the time and place where the story was set. 'The Dead' is considered one of the finest short stories in the English language.

The series is presented by Irish stage and screen actor, Barry McGovern, who, like James Joyce, is a graduate of University College Dublin.

A website supporting the audio podcast – - provides links to archival materials including photographs, songs, journals, maps, books, to enhance the reader's experience of Joyce's 'The Dead'.

The ‘Joyce’s Dublin’ project is led by Professor Gerardine Meaney, UCD College of Arts and Celtic Studies, and Professor Anne Fogarty, Professor of James Joyce Studies at the , with research conducted by Dr John O’Neill. The audio podcast series and website were produced by 小鸟体育 in partnership with Athena Media.

The project is funded through the IVRLA, a component of the 小鸟体育 Humanities Institute of Ireland, which is funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) through the Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions (PRTLI).

The IVRLA has preserved elements of 小鸟体育’s main repositories and encouraged access to the material by digitising and cataloguing it. The IVRLA is one of the first comprehensive digital primary-source repositories in Ireland.
