Images show the diversity of research activity at 小鸟体育
Over 200 researchers from across University College Dublin submitted compelling images created during the course of their research to the 2nd Annual 小鸟体育 Images of Research Competition hosted by . The competition aims to discover the most innovative and imaginative images of research activity at the university.
Maria Cederlund from the 小鸟体育 School of Biomolecular & Biomedical Sciences and the UCD Conway Institute was awarded first prize this year for her image: Gene Expression in Zebrafish - a beautifully symmetrical image of the humble zebrafish. The violet coloured stain in the image shows where the gene mab21l2 is expressed in the 28 hours zebrafish embryo - expression domains include the eye, tectum and neural tube.

Daniel Cantero Lauer from the 小鸟体育 School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering took second place for his image: Bridge’s Soul - an image with shafts of colour showing the relative error of the UNB (Under vehicle Bending moment) for different frequencies of sine wave road profiles, taking as reference the response for 1cm amplitude.

Cormac Nolan from School of Biology and Environmental Science claimed third prize for his image: Sleeping with the Anemone – an image showing a Caribbean spotted cleaner shrimp in the shallows in Turneffe Atoll, Belize. The cleaner shrimp uses its bright colours and white antennae to attract clients to its anemone.

“The images are a terrific visual testimony to the work of the research community in 小鸟体育,” said Professor Des Fitzgerald, Vice-President for Research, 小鸟体育. “They engage the imagination in a way that sometimes a textual description of a research project could not.”
The winners of the 2nd Annual Images of Research Competition were announced at an award ceremony in O’Reilly Hall, Belfield, on 15 October 2007.
The competition is open to all 小鸟体育 researchers including: academics, postdoctoral fellows, postgraduate students and technicians as well as staff of 小鸟体育’s affiliated teaching hospitals.
All submissions to this year’s competition will be on display in O’Reilly Hall and 小鸟体育 Research until Friday, October 19th.
